Request a missing category
Before registering equipment or uploading an asset register, check Equipment category prerequisites. Each asset needs an active category in the selected organisation. A member with equipment creation permission selects Request an equipment category, supplies its name and explains the work it enables. Saving the request creates no category and grants no permission.
Use View category requests to resume and see the decision. A colleague with category creation permission creates or selects an active category through the ordinary controls, then resolves the request with a reason. They may instead decline with a reason. A resolved request links the retained category; refresh equipment or import choices before continuing. Requests and decisions remain attributable.
An active equipment category is required before registering equipment. Open Equipment, then Equipment categories, and select New category or Create first equipment category. Enter its name and optional description. Category management requires the applicable permission; assignment or registration permission alone does not grant it.
Offer defaults for new drafts
The category form provides optional Suggested criticality, Suggest a reference or check-standard profile, and Suggested active requirement template choices. Leave No category default or No suggested template when no recommendation is needed. Templates must be active in this organisation and require template-read permission to select.
Save with Save category. The defaults are proposals for new assets and requirements. They never change existing equipment, apply a requirement to an asset, activate a draft, or grant reference-standard status. There is no bulk application of category defaults.
When registering new equipment in that category, review Category draft proposals and choose Apply category draft proposals if useful. A criticality you already changed is kept. Review the final criticality before saving; high or critical equipment still follows its normal independent release controls.
A reference-role suggestion offers Review reference or check-standard profile after registration. Choose whether to create that separate profile through its own permitted workflow. Current calibrated evidence and suitability for the actual work remain separate checks; the suggestion is not approval or a claim of traceability.
When creating a custom requirement, Proposed draft defaults explains its work type, reviewed model, category and site context. A compatible active category template can be offered through Review suggested active template. Review its fixed revision and assign it explicitly; category defaults do not automatically assign or activate requirements.
Revise or archive a category
Use the category's normal edit action to change its description or proposed defaults. Existing assets and assigned policies retain their values. Archiving a category preserves equipment history and removes it from new registration choices. Restore or replace the category through the permitted workflow before registering further assets.
